Today I saw an obituary where my first cousin had passed away.
I never really knew him.
Families moved across America and brothers and sisters often saw each other for the last time over thirty years ago. Work and time and distance made it seem as if people were living in another nation. As huge a tract of land as this is it is indeed as if someone is in another country.
It makes us aware of our isolation. Seeing the obit of a man who was my uncle's brother and knowing I never really knew who he was other than a name on a Christmas card.
Now so many have chosen not to have children and that includes me.
Our culture will die out with us along with the idea of 'manifest destiny.'
Maybe that is how things should be?
